Katherine Semchuk is the 2017 New Work Award recipient.

The dancer, choreographer and instructor currently living and working in Edmonton. She pursued contemporary dance and composition while attending the Victoria School of the Arts before completing The School of Toronto Dance Theatre’s Professional Training Program. She’s performed with The Chimera Project’s Company B and Echo Dance Company. Her choreography has been presented in Toronto Nostos Collective’s Chasing the Light and in Edmonton as part of the Feats Festival of Dance and Toy Guns Dance Theatre’s Dancing in the Park.

Semchuk also passes on her love of dance as a teacher at local studios and as a guest teacher, mentor and choreographer at Victoria School of the Arts and Scona High School.

​Semchuk receives:

  • $2000 in prize money
  • Mentorship from the Good Women Dance Collective throughout 2017
  • A performance spot at the 2018 Chinook Series

The award was handed out by GWDC on February 10, 2017 during the Expanse Festival’s Alberta Grown program as part of the Chinook Series where the 2016 recipient of the New Work Award, Aimee Rushton will premiere her new work, vulnerable and soft and strange and stomping.
