We are excited to have guest teacher Kyra Newton teaching our company classes online!

Class description – Juicy Jam:

The 1-hour class will be based in contemporary dance with an emphasis on moving in a playful way. Kyra Newton will guide you through improvisational exercises to help you find satisfying movements and feel awake. Together, we will move energy through our bodies, working with different movement patterns to find our inner groove. I look forward to finding presence through movement with you!

Biography:

Kyra Newton is a dance artist based in Calgary, Alberta. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Contemporary Dance and Sociology from Simon Fraser University. Kyra has obtained certifications in DanceAbility, an accessible dance training for people with and without disabilities, Inner Journeys, a breath and improvised dance methodology, and Animal Flow, a yoga/physical fitness technique. To continue her growth as a dancer, she has attended professional training programs across North America.

Kyra is the Artistic Director of Momo Movement, a dance company for people with and without disabilities and the co-creator of YYC Contemporary Technique, a training program for emerging and professional dancers. She has worked with dance companies and individuals, including La Caravan Dance Theatre, Corps Bara, Con8 Collective, Sylvie Moquin, Ruth Levin, Rufi Oswaldo and several Vancouver based artists.

To date, she has choreographed two full and four short length works, presented by Theatre Junction Grand, W&M Dance Project, the Ignite Festival of Emerging Artist’s and Collide. Ms. Newton has received funding from the Calgary Arts Development, Alberta Dance Alliance, Canada Council for the Arts, and Humainologie. Newton is passionate about co-creating contemporary dance work that examines the intersection of identity, emotionality, and raw, authentic physical expression.
