Established Canadian choreographer Mélanie Demers (founder of the Montreal-based dance company Mayday) is a leader nationally in the creation of contemporary dance. To date, Demers has been presented in some thirty cities across Europe, America, Africa and Asia. Her theatrical approach works with surrealistic resonances that have the impact of raw poetry.Mélanie Demers’ workshops are designed in a way to create a territory where real meetings are possible. Tailored according to the context and the needs of the group, the classes become laboratories to experiment and risk in a safe environment. In this workshop, Demers will investigate the role of dance and art in society, aiming to provide a suitable playground for artists to explore “inner mythology” and develop a creative process that comes from inside and reflects on the outside. Her work always begins with a conversation around difficult and personal topics that continue into a physical application of the ideas raised by such a discussion. Soon, guided improvisations take over and the process is set in motion. Demers’ workshops are conducted in a spirit of community and shared experiences, addressing the importance of the individual responsibility of the artists to connect with their creative potential and the appropriation of the movement and of the discourse. Here and now… or never.
