Master Class with Gerry Morita


We have once again partnered with the Brian Webb Dance Company to provide Master Classes for local dance practitioners to learn from artists featured in BWDC’s 2018/19 Season. Our first Master Class of the season will be lead by Gerry Morita, Artistic Director ofMile Zero Dance.

Gerry will be teaching a class on improvisation with a somatic release warm up. The focus will be on finding sustained ways to be present within the live composition of the work while finding moments to enjoy and develop.

Originally from rural Saskatchewan, Gerry Morita has a BA in Dance from Simon Fraser University and an MFA in Theatre Practice from U of A. She has lived and worked in Vancouver, Montréal, and Tokyo as a dancer, choreographer, performance artist and teacher before moving to Edmonton and becoming Mile Zero Dance’s Artistic Director in 2006. She speaks mediocre French and Japanese, but her work has toured Poland, Turkey, Estonia, Canada, and Japan.  

Her body of work involves continuous inquiry into new ways of seeing movement, the body, and the spaces between us. Morita studies and teaches contact improvisation, Noguchi Taiso and other somatic-based and improving technique, working with artists from all disciplines in a vast array of both conventional and site-specific venues. She has received the Mayor’s Award for Innovation in Artistic Direction, the Edmonton Salute for Excellence, Edmonton Artists’ Trust Fund and was one of Alberta’s 25 Influential Artists recognized in 2016. She has received federal, municipal and provincial grants, has sat on various peer committees, and continues to perform.
